ADDITION TO TASK 27

We will soon be adding this to TASK 27:

That's right, a t-shirt slingshot. The video is terrible, but the opportunities will be great. It'll shoot a shirt over 100 yards. Simply put, it's a nice addition to the one t-shirt cannon we already have in the stable (and we'll be getting three slingshots).

Also, we have a student who is working on creating a t-shirt cannon for the Athletic Department's use. Got to love working at a school with incredible engineers! Looking forward to the finished product come the 2nd semester.

TASK 6: THE MUSTACHE

Gentlemen (and there are quite a few of you on this campus),

It's November, or more to the liking of my own ears: Movember. Check out the site to see how you can get involved in supporting men's health - not the magazine, just a better lifestyle. It's an important cause and one worth throwing out your razor's for a month. The song above is quite hilarious give it a listen, and if you are enthralled with the sweet melodies then you can be transported to another dimension by owning the song. It's up on iTunes.

It's also perfect timing. Both our soccer teams are in the midst of their playoffs, as is our women's volleyball team, and our cross country teams will be heading cross county to compete in nationals shortly. Get out there and grow some excess hair!

Enjoy a few short videos while your at it:

ALUM MARK HOGAN ON THE 50 TASKS

Mark Hogan is a smart guy. Graduate of Embry-Riddle. Worked for the school for a few years after graduating. Got a job with a small airplane company known as Boeing. Moved to Seattle. Became the General Supervisor for Boeing's Testing. Let's just say he's done well for himself.

What's great about Mark is that he makes a point to come back every year. A couple of years ago he was in a kilt for Homecoming, this year he decided to take on R. Rodriguez in the Moe's Burrito Eating Contest. He comes back because he ran shop at Embry-Riddle. He was a member of the Lambda Chi fraternity. He began the precursor to the Flock, and injected some energy and excitement around the Athletic Department. He started a whole slew of cheers that still stick around today at Embry-Riddle. The man is legend.

Mark came down to Daytona not knowing anything about the 50 TASKS, but now he wants to own it. We got him to sit in front of a camera and talk about the glory days and about how he's challenged every student on campus that he can do more Tasks from his home in Seattle, Washington, than they can do on campus. I know Mark's got some gusto, but let's go Eagles. Make Mark eat crow.

HOMECOMING + TASKS

It was a busy weekend to say the least. Four home games on Saturday alone, and I'm still trying to recover. The teams got it done, though. All winners; Volleyball (3-0), Men's Soccer (6-0), Basketball (91-67) and Women's Soccer (0-0; 3-1 in penalty shots). We had some people turn in some serious TASK work, too.

Our first TASK 5 is accomplished. Was it ever accomplished. Bobby and Alex didn't just go with the Speedo, they added another dimension by going straight up Sisqo on us with that thong, tha-thong, tha-thong. Kudos, gentlemen (pictured above).

I saw a big head in the crowd (TASK 20), I saw 1,300 people show up for the first basketball game (part of TASK 49) and we had a few participants in all of our different in-game promotions (TASK 41).

Keep knocking them off, people. This weekend basketball is hosting back to back games: Friday (8 pm) and Saturday (either 5 or 7 pm).

TOO LONG!

It's been too long since we've been here, and that's entirely my fault. We were busy getting ready for the start of basketball season and the beginnings of conference tournament time for our soccer and volleyball teams. We're still looking for our first 10 TASK finisher, and I know we've got a few of you out there - we just need to see the photographic evidence posted up on the EMBRY-RIDDLE 50 TASKS wall.

Maybe you don't have a camera. Well, Christmas is coming up and we suggest that you ask Santa for one. Maybe this one (HD video capabilities). Or this one (it also shoots video in HD). Or get a sweet (and cheap) Hero cam for when you jump out of the plane to skydive into the game.

Any way, it's time to get cranked up for some more tasks. You can knock off another piece of TASK 49 this Saturday when basketball holds their home opener & Homecoming game. Check out the video above for all the action this weekend (psst - there's a lot going on. Only on Saturday).

TOP 10

We're here to spice things up a little bit today. We took a week off of writing the blog to allow you all to catch up on some much needed school work (and so that we could relax during a slow week in athletics). But we're back, and with a vengeance. Today, Men's Soccer will be playing a game at 7 pm, and it will be the first opportunity (out of many) for you to compete against the Embry-Riddle's own food eating champ - R. Rodriguez. He's undefeated - but so far has only ben champ of the burrito. Tonight's eating competition will be his first venture in speed hot dog eating.

To commemorate the first opportunity to finish TASK 35 we've come up with a TOP 10 list of best eaters of all time. If your favorite isn't on the list, throw a little hot sauce on your computer; it'll all go down easier.

10. The Cookie Monster
The original blue man eats more cookies than Santa on Christmas Eve.

9. That owl from the Tootsie Pop commercial:
He houses that Tootsie Pop in only three licks, during the day. That's not easy for a nocturnal hunter.

8. Scooby Doo
You're telling me that this is the only time that Scooby ever got bloated on Scooby Snacks? And it was on the Kids WB? Get outta here.

7. Jabba The Hutt
Ugly and enormous, and that tongue; dear god that tongue.

6. Adam for Man Vs. Food
Maybe not the greatest in quickness, but this man travels and eats for a living. His encyclopedic knowledge about every type of food he eats only adds to his mystique. The first human on the list.

5. Koboyashi
Besides the owl, the smallest of the competitors, and by far the most ripped. But this guy has eaten more of Tokyo than Godzilla.

4. Pac-Man
You can choose either the Mr. or Mrs. Just don't push the ghosts too far.

3. Joey Chestnutt
The single best human eater of all time. The man eats more in a single sitting than most 3rd world countries get in a year.

2. Gorgon Heap
Check out the muppet eat everything under the sun here. The following video not as good, but represents Gorgon quite well.

A tribute about Gorgon Heap
Uploaded by patROO. - Watch more comedy videos and sitcoms.

1. Slimer
Wasn't sure about this one until I saw this clip. And yes, there was a Ghostbusters cartoon.

AVION ARTICLE ON THE 50 TASKS

In this week's edition of the Avion (ERAU's student newspaper) writer and photographer Aaron Craig wrote about what it means to participate in the 50 TASKS challenge. It's great to get publicity about the efforts our Sports Marketing team has been building for the student body on campus. Help us continue to create new and lasting traditions at Embry-Riddle by joining in. We'll do our part, but we need you to make campus life successful. Read the article here.

IF ONLY...

...my feet were to move as fast as James Brown's tomorrow. I'd feel a heck of a lot better about running the 8K portion of the Embry-Riddle Cross Country meet sponsored by Asics. I don't plan on singing while moving either, so simply put, the man was legendary. I will be running with those sunglasses on when I take down TASK 12 though.

TASK 12

It's fast approaching. This Saturday September 25th beginning at 7:20 am the 8K portion of Embry-Riddle's Asics Challenge Cross Country meet will be under way. At 8:00 am the 5K race will begin (and I'll definitely still be running that 8K). Above you can witness a video that was put together to let people know about the event. Come out, bring your running shoes (and potentially an oxygen mask) and get a little exercise while knocking off TASK 12.

BEACH BALL (TASK 28)

The beach ball came out tonight at the volleyball game, and every timeout called (there were a lot called by St. Thomas) it went up in the air and a party got started. Fantastic. Enjoy the video taken from the new Go Pro camera. Not a bad view, need to clean the plastic camera housing unit, but other than that, it looks pretty sharp.

GO PRO!

Oh baby, we just got this new bad boy and I can't wait to put it to some use. It'll be fantastic when some students are Skydiving Into A Game (TASK 34: NBD), and we can capture unbelievable footage the entire way down. It's lights, camera, action for some videos with it soon to promo TASK 12, which is next weekend September 25th, and some soccer and basketball spots a bit later.

For those getting all 50'd up or those of you who are skateboarding around campus (yeah all 12,000 of you), take a peak at the Go Pro demo reel below (so many rhymes). It's hot.

TASK 12

TASK 12 is coming soon. Not this weekend, but the next, Embry-Riddle will host their Cross Country meet. Due to construction on the campus, this event might not be as large as it has been in the past, but you can still knock one off the 50 TASKS. Not to worry if you aren't in great shape, I had a cheeseburger with bacon and jalepenos (and weighed in at 280 lbs) the night before running in the Men's 8K last year. It wasn't pretty, but I finished...during the women's race. The Ladies will take a 5K course around campus. All you've got to do is run in one of them. Come out, sport some short shorts, maybe a mullet. If you can grow a 'stache that fast, recognize the greatness that was USA Track star Steve Prefontaine.

TASK 12 goes down Saturday September 25th. The race will kick off at 7:05 am - sharp. Be ready to run!

I WANT THIS TO BE A NEW TASK...

Organize this:

GAME TONIGHT

Tonight will be the first ever REZ RUMBLE - a competition between our residence halls at Embry-Riddle. Our women's soccer team will play arch-rival Flagler College at 7 pm, and the dorm with the largest percentage of attendance at the game will be the winner (for now, there are 6 more throughout the year). However, this is the 50 TASKS blog, and that's what we're here to talk about. Tonight, we'll have a great halftime show (rain or shine) so you can knock off TASK 41 - Participate in an in-game promotion. We may even be pulling out the Ocean Deck Surfboard to promote Friday's Beach Night Men's Soccer game, and if we do you'll be able to cross off TASK 11 - Ride the Ocean Deck Surfboard. We may even bring the t-shirt cannon back out (TASK 27).

I love that we've got several groups competing to accomplish all 50 TASKS as soon as they can. Remember if you want to sing the national anthem (TASK 36) or skydive into a game (TASK 34) or be the school mascot (TASK 8), hit the Sports Marketing Department up at either 386.323.5030 or 386.341.2170 or email michael.farrell@erau.edu

Be sure to check out the Big Head that I bring to the game tonight (TASK 20). I think you'll like it (hint: not at the table Carlos).

Game time is 7 pm. The opponent is Flagler (and the remainder of your 50 Tasks). Let's dominate them.

TASK 42: PARTICIPATE IN A THEME NIGHT

The Flock hosted their first theme night last night: 80's Night. It was bonkers, bananas, blissful even. Plenty of people came out to get rowdy, and the volleyball team handled their opponent 3-1. There were tons of kids dressed up, too. Neon, side ponies, deep v's, even a few Michael Jackson look alikes (from all his different looks in the 80s).

Prior to the game, in order to get ready, I was able to make my way into Hot Topic and the Volusia Mall. This is some accomplishment since I'm pretty sure that if your education level exceeds the 8th grade they normally bar you from the store. After my stealth moves to just get inside, I picked up a few shirts to fire off from the t-shirt cannon (TASK 27), and got myself a Biz Markie t-shirt. Hello 80's, and hello ladies. You may say he's just a friend, but that t-shirt was straight up bonafied.

We had one lucky, mullet-clad fan take down TASK 27 by firing off several rounds from the t-shirt cannon, and we had a couple different groups lead a chant (TASK 13). All in all it was a great day to knock off some tasks. There's more to be done tonight as soccer and volleyball both play at home at 7 pm.

See all the pics here.

TASK19: SIGN THE EAGLE HEAD AT THE OCEAN DECK

We've already had a couple of students finish this task (nice work boys from Wood 3rd Floor - or as they call themselves: the Whiskey/3), and since the Ocean Deck is the Flock's primary sponsor, we want a whole bunch more students to participate in this one. The Eagle Head is right above the left corner of the bar at the upstairs portion of the OD. You'll even get to stand on top of the bar so that you can sign in. Recommendation: make sure they've got a good song on so you can go all Coyote Ugly after you sign.

Hint: By visiting the Ocean Deck you are also chipping away at TASK 24: Visiting 8 Flock Sponsors.

Three tasks crossed off the list in 4 days. Feeling good so far. Be sure to Fan the EMBRY-RIDDLE 50 TASKS page on Facebook and post your own adventures.

TASKS 49 SO FAR...

About to knock out Volleyball this Thursday in their home opener. You should, too.

TASK 41: PARTICIPATE IN AN IN-GAME PROMOTION

We had one at the Orientation Soccer Game. A little beat down on the Twilight Saga stars. We didn't care if you were Team Edward or Team Jacob - we just wanted to see them get crushed. And they did. Tucker Jensen, a baseball player for Embry-Riddle, shows great swing technique here.

COUPLE IN THE BOOKS

Over 650 students came to the first game for Embry-Riddle Athletics last night. While the men's soccer team put it to NCAA Division I University of North Florida 2-1, those 650 students were able to cross of TASK 29 from their EMBRY-RIDDLE BUCKET LIST. That wasn't all that was crossed off. Our intrepid Taskmaster, Mike Farrell was present at the game, and also participated in the halftime promotion. So long TASK 41. That makes two down, and fourty-eight to go.

There is a women's soccer game tonight at 6 pm. Immediately following is the hypnotist CJ Johnson. Lots more to accomplish tonight. Maybe Mike will lead the crowd in a chant (TASK 13).

BUSY

We've been busy, but that's no excuse to leave you all out there in cyber-world hanging. Last night was the first opportunity to knock off a TASK. It was Task 29 - Attend the Orientation Soccer Game. We'll have some photos and a recap later on today. Quickly though, it went smashingly well. The rain stayed away, and the Eagles won the game 2-1 over NCAA Division I University of North Florida. More later...

CHALLENGER FOUND

That's right, we've got one roped in. The Sports Marketing Department at Embry-Riddle has our 50 Tasks book printing right now so that the incoming freshman will have a hard copy of at least 16 of the tasks. The others can all be found at http://embryriddlesports.com/flock, or previous incantations of this blog.

Who's the sap? Our Assistant Director of Sports Marketing - Mike Farrell - is planning on accomplishing all 50 Tasks in the next two semesters. The kicker? He'll be posting video of himself doing most of the events on this blog. So stay tuned. And get excited. It's going to be a crazy year.

Be sure to show up on August 29th in order to knock off the Orientation Soccer Game (Task 29). We'll have a DJ from the Spandex Superheroes spinning great tunes and a BBQ starting at 5 pm.

50 TASKS

Here's the digital version of the 50 Tasks book. We'll have this version up on the Flock site soon enough. It's a Flash file, so you just need to click on the bottom right hand corner to turn the page. You'll see the hand icon come up, and click away to see all 50 Tasks (plus two Extra Credit tasks!).

HELLO

Hello internet. Let's do a quick introduction. We are the Sports Marketing Department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. We've got (what we think is) a great idea for the upcoming school year(s). In order to create more tradition at the school, we've put together a bucket list for the students. Fifty different tasks that have all been done at Embry-Riddle before, and that we feel can add to school spirit.

We'll have a Facebook page, we'll have the list as part of our Flock website, and you will be able to follow along with one of us (TBD) as we set out to accomplish all fifty this year.

We hope you'll join us. Some of the tasks are incredibly easy - starting the wave - others get to be a bit trickier. We want to see some hard evidence that you've accomplished all the tasks. So be the next Ansel Adams and have a camera on you at all times. Video you and your friends doing some of the more ridiculous things in the book.

Here are some of the basics:

Use this as a guide to help you navigate the intense 4-6 years of your undergraduate schooling at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. If you have accomplished all the tasks listed by the time you graduate you will be able to inundate future business partners, lovers & grandchildren with stories of your collegiate successes. In order to do all this you will need a FACEBOOK account. Friend JOE FLOCKER, and then quickly join the EMBRY RIDDLE 50 TASKS group. Upload photos of yourself doing the outrageous tasks into each of the different photo albums. There will be an upload button on each task of the online book that will take you directly to the corresponding Facebook page. It’s that easy.

The future is yours for the taking!
